The Gelibolu Peninsula Historical National Park (known as Gelibolu Yarımadası Tarihi Milli parkı) was founded in in 1973. It is with a total area of 33,000 hectares and is on the United Nations list of Parks and Protection Areas. It is consisting of Eceabat and some other small villages at the southern edge of the Gelibolu Peninsula and on the European shore of Dardanelles (Canakkale Bogazi). Nattional park is a protected area and to honour the many thousands of soldiers who lost their lives on the Gallipoli Peninsula during World War I, the area is now a national park preserving the memory of that time in history. It includes memorials, monuments, cemeteries, and the natural beauty of the Ariburnu Cliffs and Salt Lake. It is easy to reach Park from Canakkale by ferry to Eceabat or Kilitbahir and then drive to North (ANZAC) front or South (CAPE HELLES) front. From Istanbul direction, there is sign for park just before Eceabat. There was a big fire and many green plantation was burnt out but driving around the park today, the visitor is struck by the peaceful atmosphere of the pristine coastal forest, green hills, sandy beaches and blue water, in sharp contrast to the fierce battles which were once fought there. Beside war sites there are pretty beaches as well. During summer noon and early afternoon is very hot. We suggest to tour in the morning or late afternoon.
